FAQs
What kind of underwear should I wear after a c-section?
High-waisted underwear that sits above your incision is the most important thing to look for. You want a wide, soft waistband that covers the incision area without rubbing or digging in, and breathable fabric that won't trap moisture against healing skin. Avoid anything low-rise, lace-trimmed at the waistline, or with a tight elastic band that falls directly on the scar.
How high should c-section underwear sit?
Ideally, your waistband should sit two to three inches above your incision line — fully covering the surgical area so there's no friction or pressure on the scar. This also allows the underwear to provide gentle compression to the lower abdomen, which can help reduce swelling during recovery.
When can I start wearing regular underwear after a c-section?
Most moms are able to transition back to regular underwear around six weeks postpartum, once the incision has healed and soreness has significantly reduced. That said, every recovery is different — if you're still feeling pressure or sensitivity at the incision site, continuing to wear high-waisted recovery underwear is completely reasonable.
Can c-section underwear hold postpartum pads or wound dressings?
Yes — high-waisted c-section underwear is designed with exactly this in mind. The wide, full-coverage cut holds postpartum pads securely in place for lochia (postpartum bleeding), and many styles can also accommodate wound dressings or cooling gel packs over the incision without bunching or shifting.
How many pairs of c-section underwear do I need?
Plan for at least eight to ten pairs in the early weeks — you'll be changing them frequently due to postpartum bleeding, and laundry is the last thing you want to think about while recovering and caring for a newborn. Kindred Bravely's postpartum underwear comes in multi-packs for exactly this reason.
