I knew I was taking a risk by buying this shirt without any reviews, but I went with my gut on Black Friday and could not be happier with my purchase.
I have a capsule wardrobe and am obsessively picky about the quality, comfort, and fit of each item in my wardrobe. I don't own a lot of KB stuff, but I really trust this brand and have not been let down even with a couple KB things I've found second hand. When KB released these shirts a few weeks ago, I knew they were be exactly what I had been looking for (even down to the colors I was already on the hunt for!) (and when I say I've spent time researching maternity shirts, I mean I have put hours and hours looking on Amazon, googling brands, reading reviews, etc.).
These shirts are extremely soft and stretchy, the seams are well constructed. Both the grey and the black shirts have an almost glossy sheen to them. I don't like to show cleavage, and these shirts covered everything up while still having a flattering U-neck. I would not say the material is particularly thick (AKA hot), but it is also not remotely see-through, has good weight and a beautiful drape, and the pocket lays flat. This has the feel of an oversized shirt (think generously wide sleeves, not tight at all) but still has shoulder seams that line up perfectly -- the best of both worlds!
I didn't realize this until I got it in the mail, but was thrilled to discover that this shirt is two layers all the way around (front and back). I had a really hard time telling how the nursing seam was built by looking at the photos, and didn't realize the entire shirt was two layers. But I'm THRILLED with that! I love finding clothes with two layers, because they are so much less see-through and so much more forgiving, and show that no cost-cuts were taken:) The hidden underlayer goes all the way around, but has a gap along the sides that can easily pull over the breast to nurse. I LOVE how the top layer doesn't have ruching, a crossover cut, or that awkward nursing seam that some shirts have running straight along the bra line -- basically, it looks and feels EXACTLY like a normal t-shirt (also the softest one you've ever bought).
I do have a couple comments since I'm tall. I'm 5'9" and have a taller, skinnier build with hourglass body shape. I will say that this shirt is not as long on me as I would have liked, but it is still appropriately long and covers front and back. I just don't feel like I could wear this shirt with only leggings -- it's not long enough on me to fully cover the crotch in front as a tunic length shirt would. I am 155 pre-pregnancy and even though I technically fit a lot of S/M shirts, I usually order soft t-shirts in L because I like things oversized and drapey. Ordered this in Large, and the shoulder seams line up exactly right on me. I actually wonder if I would have liked the fit of the XL better as a tall person, only wondering because I'm not sure if this would start to feel too short when my baby bump gets too big (currently I am 6 months but have not "popped" quite yet). At any rate I'm 6 months pregnant, 163 lbs, and this shirt fits well. I expect it will fit well post-partum and be very comfortable during recovery. Because I can tell that it fits me as it was intended to, I'm not going to exchange it for an XL. However, if I get any extra Christmas money, I could totally see myself buying this shirt in a larger size just to wear around the house and possibly with leggings out!
The only other comment I have is for KB - I am quite busty and would literally pay more to have this exact same shirt with no pocket on the front - not that there's anything wrong with the way the pocket lays, but some of us need to avoid any bust detailing like the plague :) Having this one change/option would truly make this the most worthwhile maternity capsule investment on the market. :)
Finally, I want to say that the price tag on this shirt is FAIR (and really even LOW) -- if you are willing to pay more for nicer items, you will be pleasantly surprised by the low price of this shirt. It's worth every penny and I am surprised that such a nice piece is available from such a good brand at such a great price.
I am SO EXCITED that KB has introduced these everyday pieces, and I hope to see more maternity basics added over time for those of us who like to own only a few of the very best things.
